No coaching. No sessions. No technique work. Instead, the group spends the morning and early afternoon serving the local community in El Tránsito, Nicaragua: the same community whose coastline hosted the waves they’ve been riding all week.
We call it Give Back Day. It’s the surf retreat community service component built into every single week at Surf + Soul. And most guests say it’s the day the retreat stops being about them, which is exactly when it hits the deepest.
What Does the Surf Retreat Community Service Look Like?
The specifics change from week to week based on what the community needs. We partner with local nonprofits, churches, and schools near our venue to identify surf retreat community service projects with a visible outcome: something our guests can start, finish, and see the result of before they leave.
Some weeks, that’s painting a classroom at the local school. Some weeks, it’s a beach cleanup along the stretch of coastline the group has been surfing. Some weeks, it’s delivering supplies to a rural village further inland, or helping with a construction project at a community center, or cooking a meal alongside local families.
The work is hands-on. Guests wear Surf + Soul shirts, pick up tools, and work alongside the people who call this place home. No one watches from the sidelines. No one takes selfies while someone else paints.
What Is The Local Table?
Lunch on Give Back Day is different from every other day of the retreat. Instead of returning to the venue, the group eats with the community they served. We call it The Local Table.
The meal might be at the school, at a local church, or on the beach with the families who live nearby. The food is local. The conversation is real: sometimes in broken Spanish, sometimes in gestures, sometimes in the universal language of laughter and shared plates.
When guests share a table with the people they just served, something shifts. The power dynamic dissolves. It’s no longer charity. It’s community. It’s two groups of people eating together, learning each other’s names, and discovering that the distance between a surf retreat and a fishing village is shorter than it looks.
Why Is Give Back Day on Day 6?
The placement of Give Back Day on Day 6 is intentional. After five days of receiving (waves, coaching, worship, rest, scripture, community) the current reverses. You pour out.
Day 1 was Surrender. Day 2 was Trust. Day 3 was Courage. Day 4 was Community. Day 5 was Perseverance. Day 6 is Generosity, and it’s the day the week’s spiritual arc becomes physical. Faith without works is surfing without paddling.
The theme verse for Day 6 is 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
Guests arrive at Surf + Soul carrying stress, exhaustion, doubt, grief. By Day 6, they’ve been filled. Give Back Day is the overflow.
What Is the Offering Paddle?
After the surf retreat community service wraps in the early afternoon, the group returns to the venue for one final surf session, but it’s different from every other session of the week.
Before paddling out, the session is reframed: this isn’t about improving. It’s not about catching a bigger wave or standing longer. This is surfing as gratitude. An offering.
No coaching. No critique. Just joy. And something remarkable happens: guests who’ve been focused on technique all week suddenly surf with freedom. Some of the best rides of the entire retreat happen in this session, because people stop trying and start playing.
After the Offering Paddle, the evening closes with the Paddle Out Circle at sunset: the group’s final ceremony on the water before The Commission ceremony on Day 7.
