We get asked this a lot: “Is this like a conference?”
Short answer: no.
Longer answer: the difference between a conference and a small group Christian retreat is the difference between watching a cooking show and sitting down to a meal someone made for you.
Both involve food. Only one feeds you.
The Conference Model
We have been to plenty. You probably have too. A hotel ballroom. Name tags. A keynote speaker. Breakout sessions. You take notes, leave with new ideas, and head home ready to do something with them.
That format does what it is built to do: deliver content and inspiration to a lot of people at once. There is real value in that.
However, transformation works differently. It is slower, smaller, and more relational than a large-scale weekend event.
What Happens When You Shrink the Room
Surf + Soul retreats cap at small groups. Not because we cannot handle more. We simply will not.
When you shrink the room, everything changes. You cannot hide in the back row or take notes while avoiding eye contact. Instead, you are in it: knee-deep in the Pacific with people who are just as nervous as you are.
Here is what becomes possible in a small group Christian retreat:
Vulnerability becomes possible. It is one thing to hear a speaker talk about brokenness from a stage. It is another to hear the person on the board next to you say, “I haven’t talked to my brother in four years and I don’t know how to fix it.”
Accountability becomes natural. You eat together, surf together, and sit around the fire together. Simply put, you cannot perform for seven days. The mask comes off because keeping it on is more exhausting than letting it fall.
Scripture becomes personal. We do not do lectures. Moreover, we read together, in context: salt on your skin, sand under your feet, the sound of the ocean behind every word. In fact, the Bible was written by people who lived outdoors, near water, under open sky. Reading it that way changes everything.
The Jesus Model Wasn’t a Conference
Jesus did not rent a ballroom. He called twelve people, walked with them, ate with them, sailed with them, and let them watch him live.
He taught on hillsides and shorelines, asked questions more than he gave answers, and washed feet.
That is not a conference. That is a small group Christian retreat: slow, embodied, relational, and built around presence rather than performance.
We are not comparing ourselves to Jesus. Instead, we are saying the model he chose works. And it is worth returning to.
What We Do Instead
A week at Surf + Soul is built around three things: surf, scripture, and one another.
Every morning starts in the water. Every evening ends around a fire. In between, there is space: for conversation, for prayer, for the kind of silence that only happens when you are far from everything that usually fills it.
There is no keynote, no breakout sessions, no swag bag.
There is a board with your name on it. A circle of people who showed up for the same reason you did. And an ocean that does not care about your title, your platform, or your five-year plan.
That is it. And it is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a small group Christian retreat?
An intentional experience for a limited number of participants, focused on spiritual formation and transformation rather than information delivery. Unlike a conference, a small group Christian retreat prioritizes depth over scale and presence over performance.
How is a small group Christian retreat different from a conference?
A conference delivers content to hundreds at once. A small group Christian retreat works on depth: fewer participants who eat, pray, and surf together, and cannot hide from one another. Vulnerability becomes possible. Accountability becomes natural. Scripture becomes personal when you read it outdoors near water rather than in a hotel ballroom.
Can my church group book Surf + Soul?
Yes. Church groups, small ministries, leadership teams, and pastoral staff have all used Surf + Soul for spiritual renewal and community formation. Reach out through the partners page to discuss bringing your group.
